PingPressFM

PingPressFM is a WordPress plugin which submits your posts to Ping.fm. A service which can update more than 30 snetworks from one source. You can download the latest version from the Wordpress Repository.

For Twitter updates on the plugin follow @soldoutactivist. And also be sure to follow the plugin (@pingpressfm) to show your support!

How Do I Get A Ping.fm Key?
You will need a Ping.fm account, and then go here for your Application Key.

Recommendations for SNetwork Triggers
The best way to configure your Ping.fm Dashboard triggers is to activate only the best suited trigger for the particular social network. Twitter, Brightkite are micro-blogs. Facebook, LinkedIn are good for Status Updates. And Blogger, LiveJournal are obviously blogs. MySpace can have both Status Updates and Blog as they are different parts of your profile and don't overlap. A note about social bookmarking sites such as Delicious: All plugin generated links ($slink, $link) are prefixed so they are not entered into social bookmarking sites.

A Note About Scheduled Posts
Version 2.2.0+ supports Scheduled Posts with one caveat. WordPress utilizes a lazy automation system in which the software performs automated tasks (e.g., scheduled posts) only when someone visits the site; there is no built-in background functionality (such as crontab). Example: If you had set up a scheduled post for an hour in the future and the next visitor was two hours later, that's when your post went live and subsequently sent to Ping.fm. It is not within the current WordPress API to achieve cron automation, and therefore the plugin will not have such functionality until that is changed. There are alternatives, which I will post when I have the time.

Some Precautions

  • Pick one: TwitterTools or PingPressFM. Otherwise turn off twitter updates in your Ping.fm dashboard.
  • Best to turn off FriendFeed crossposting if you use the service. Otherwise a microblog post which goes to Twitter and FriendFeed will get posted on Twitter at least twice. Same goes for any other snetwork with crossposting abilities.
  • Do not use the WordPress Ping.fm Custom URL plugin when PingPress.fm is active. Otherwise, when you post to Ping.fm, Ping.fm will post back to your site, which will post back to Ping.fm. Don't get me wrong, though, the guy that wrote the plugin is a good guy.
